Healthcare system

Argentina has a mixed healthcare system with public, private and social security sectors (Argentina Guide). Family medicine is recognized by the government, where they strive to provide free access to medical care (Argentina Guide). There are 51.76% of physicians in the public sub-sector, 39.08% in the private and 9.17% in the social security subsector (WHO).

In Argentina, it is possible to enter into medical school immediately after high school, thus the medical program is longer; consisting of 6 years of medical school followed by 4 years of a residency program (Arya et al., 2017). An individual who wishes to pursue higher education in Argentina has 39 national (public) universities, 42 private universities, 1 foreign university, 1 provincial university, 1 international university, 6 national higher education institutes and 14 private higher education institutes to choose from. Of these, the Catholic University of Cordoba, the Healthcare Sciences University Institute, the National University of Cordoba, Universidad de Buenos Aires, and Adventist University Silver have medicine programs (Edarabia, 2019).

Argentina also has internists (13.51%), pediatricians (7.21%), and nurse practitioners, as well as physician assistants (42.85%) (WHO). Primary care is termed as “Atencion primaria de la salud APS”. As programs continue; however, many residents show less interest in primary care (Del Carmen Gayol, Carrera, Mancia) (Arya et al., 2017). In Argentina, family physicians work in a community and follow a family model of health delivery in basic teams. They act as gatekeepers; they are the first contact providers of health care systems (WHO).
