Healthcare system

Tunisia has a mixed system; with public and private sectors. Individuals consider any doctor a family doctor.

6,000 physicians currently work in the public sector.

training

Tunisia’s recent implementation of family medicine as a specialty requires Master’s training in family medicine, with 6 years of Medical School, and 2 years of Master’s training in family medicine. Only one university offers this training; Sosa University. It is unknown how many graduate each year.

practice

The access to specialists is direct for ambulatory care delivered at primary healthcare centres. There is a new role of general practitioners as gatekeepers, though gatekeeping is non-existent in private sectors.
