Family medicine was established in 1992 (Global Family Doctor-WONCA Online, n.d.) in Hungary. Medical school is 6 years (Faculty of Public Health, 2018) followed by a common training program for 26 months. After this, there is 3 years of specialist training in family medicine. All five Hungarian medical universities have departments of family medicine, as well as a postgraduate program in family medicine, although the amount of resident graduates is currently unknown.
In order to practice family medicine in this country one must be a sepcialist in family medicine or be specialized in internal medicine and have worked for quite some time as a GP.

There were 65.1 family physicians per 100 000 people in 2006 (masseria et al., 2009) although the current total of family physicians is unknown. There is currently no gatekeeping program in Hungary, but several primary care providers exist such as pediatricians, primary care nurses, home care nurses and ambulatory midwives (Kringos et al., n.d.).
