o   The four year long programme offers clinical training in family medicine and other medical subspecialties – upon graduation, one is awarded with a Master of Medicine (MMed) degree.

Number of institutions that offer family medicine: Family medicine training is being offered at the Family Medicine Centers at both Aga Khan Hospital – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.

The health system in Tanzania is Public, Private and Faith- Based. (“A CLOSER LOOK AT THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN TANZANIA.”), family medicine is a recognized specialty within the healthcare system, however family physicians are finding it hard to stay motivated. Trainees in Family Medicine at the Agha Khan University are exposed to a wide range of clinical problems and are offered the opportunity to acquire skills in a variety of procedures with a team-based approach to patient care. Not many graduates of medicine in Tanzania are aware of Family Medicine opportunities. It is a fairly new concept.

Other primary care deliverers consist of Nurses and Midwives, Assistant Medical Officer, Health Laboratory Assistants, Pharmacist, Medical Officer, Health Laboratory Scientists, Laboratory Technologists. (Manongi, Rachel N, et al., 2006),  The role of the Family Physician is to offer professional services from the first contact with the patients. Primary care is devoted to providing preventive, promotive, rehabilitative and curative care with emphasis on the physical, psychological and social aspects, for the patient, family and the community. The scope is not limited by system, organ, disease entity, age or sex. (“Department of Family Medicine | MC, East Africa | The Aga Khan University.” ),  Primary care deliverers such as nurses are the gatekeepers. (KAFP, WOMNCA),  the model of primary care used is a Community-Oriented Primary Care Model, (“Primary Health Care In Ghana.”).
