Healthcare System

Chile has a universal and mixed healthcare system, with 80 people in the public system and 20 people in the private system. The family medicine care in Chile is recognized by Family Medicine Associations in influential positions, advisor’s health policies and systems. Politically it is recognized, however many Chileans lack the knowledge of a family physician (Nivelo, 2018).

training

The first set of family physicians in this country were trained in the year of 1982. Within the public system there are about 25,000 physicians and only 500 trained family physicians. There are about 16 medical schools in the country now, coming up from only 9 in 1981. Eleven of those 16 are private and the other 5 are public medical schools.

practice

Chile also has general practitioners and nurses. Family physicians in Chile are called “medico de familia” (Nivelo, 2018). They perform home visits, where they work with families. They are also clinical based, and work within the community. There is a gatekeeping system in Chile, in which referrals are required in order to see a specialist (Nivelo).  Family physicians work in a community and family model of health delivery in basic teams. It is a community-oriented primary care model (Nivelo).
